Two-way prepositions: wo? or wohin?

in, auf, an, unter…: accusative for movement, dative for location.

Nine prepositions can take two cases: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen.

  • Wohin? (where to? — movement towards a place) → accusative: Ich gehe in den Garten.
  • Wo? (where? — location) → dative: Ich bin in dem (im) Garten.

Short forms: in das → ins, in dem → im, an dem → am, an das → ans.
