Adjective endings

ein großer Hund, das kleine Kind, kalter Kaffee: how adjectives change before a noun.

An adjective before a noun takes an ending. After sein or after the noun it has none: Der Hund ist groß.

  • After der / die / das: the ending is -e or -en — der alte Mann, den alten Mann.
  • After ein / kein / mein: when the article has no ending, the adjective shows the gender — ein großer Hund, ein kleines Kind.
  • With no article: the adjective takes the article's ending — kalter Kaffee, frische Milch, kaltes Wasser.
  • In the dative, it is always -en after an article: in einem kleinen Dorf.
