der, die, das: gender

Every German noun has a gender: masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). Learn each noun WITH its article.

There is no simple rule, but these patterns help:

  • der (masculine): days, months, seasons, most nouns ending in -er for people (der Lehrer), -ling, -ismus.
  • die (feminine): nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, and most ending in -e (die Lampe).
  • das (neuter): nouns ending in -chen and -lein (das Mädchen), most verbs used as nouns (das Essen).

In the plural, every noun uses die: die Hunde, die Katzen, die Häuser.
