Prepositions with accusative or dative

für, ohne, durch always take the accusative; mit, bei, zu, von always take the dative.

Some prepositions always take the accusative: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um. Others always take the dative: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu (and gegenüber).

Common short forms: zu dem → zum, zu der → zur, bei dem → beim, von dem → vom.
