Modal verbs

können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen, mögen: they change the meaning of another verb, which goes to the end.

Modal verbs are irregular in the singular. The main verb stays in the infinitive at the end of the sentence: Ich muss heute arbeiten.

  • können = can · müssen = must, have to · wollen = want · dürfen = may, be allowed · sollen = should · möchten = would like

Careful: Ich muss nicht means 'I don't have to' — not 'I must not' (that's Ich darf nicht).
