The simple past: war, hatte, konnte

For sein, haben and the modal verbs, Germans use the simple past — even when speaking.

In speech Germans use the perfect tense for most verbs, but for sein, haben and the modal verbs they normally use the simple past (Präteritum): Ich war müde. Wir hatten Glück.

In written stories, books and the news, the Präteritum is used for all verbs: Es war einmal… Er ging nach Hause. Note: the ich and er/sie/es forms are the same.
